Diploma Programme

International Baccalaureate®

Created, developed, implemented, and instructed two complete curriculums for the Collegiate-level International Baccalaureate Music programs: Years I and II, and for the new curriculum starting in 2020.

The International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme music course provides an appropriate foundation for further study of music at university level or in music career pathways. After intense two year study encompassing music theory and analysis, composition, performance,  music history, appreciation for classical and world music, all students submit a musical links investigation and also respond to a listening examination paper.

IB

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Music theory

Music theory instruction from beginning rudimentary music theory elements through advanced score study, including roman numeral analysis, ear training, identifying cadences, intervals and form.

IB

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Composition

Students studied, then composed music in many different styles, including world music integration into original compositions. Students combined their personal musical experiences (music for which they are most familiar) with local music (less known) and global (unknown) to influence their own original compositions.

IB

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

Music Performance

IB

DIPLOMA PROGRAMME

STUDENT TESTIMONIALS

International Baccalaureate

IB Music SL, above all, equipped me with tools to analyze, appreciate, and understand music at a level which I couldn’t have accessed otherwise. I became so fascinated with the intricacies of music-how’s it’s constructed, it’s history, it’s place in society, etc.- that I felt an absence in my life when I got to college, for I had no formal music classes as in high school. To remedy this, I am now studying musicology (and molecular biology) and aspire to continue challenging myself musically! If it wasn’t for the diverse array of music introduced in IB music, the methods of analysis, and our incredible instructor, I wouldn’t have found what I’m really passionate about- and I’m very thankful for that.

IB Music with Mr. Wells was always a great start to the day. Learning introductory music theory and music history concepts was very helpful to me with continuing to play my instrument and be involved in music after high school. The material learned in IB music can be fun and useful for anyone who loves music, not just professional musicians and teachers!

Mr. Wells' thorough, accessible lesson plans and dedication to his students’ learning allowed me the space and autonomy to explore music. He consistently used his creativity and passion to inspire the very same in the classroom, using his deep musical understanding to scaffold discussions. I did not only gain an appreciation for the nuances of music - its theory, history, or role in cultural identity - I also developed critical thinking skills, analytical methods, and research habits through Mr. Well’s interpretation of the IB Music curriculum. I am incredibly thankful for my time with Mr. Wells and how he delivered the open-minded approach of the International Baccalaureate.
